Anker 622 MagGo is a Unique Portable Battery Option

Jan 12, 2024

Anker's MagGo Magnetic wireless battery has a lot of style, offering portable charging and a few cool bells and whistles.

Battery packs and chargers come in a lot of shapes and sizes from a multitude of brands. Most companies have settled on a certain approach to their chargers, but Anker has stepped outside the box with its Anker 622 MagGo battery. Essentially, a portable wireless charger, the MagGo battery offers something a little different for the average mobile user, and those who are willing to bear with the inconsistency of wireless charging will find Anker has made something pretty unique.

With a MagSafe connection, the Anker 622 will snap onto any MagSafe-compatible iPhone model (currently 12-14). The magnetism isn’t as strong depending on if someone is using a case, but either way, the phone should lock into place when held next to the Anker 622 and start charging.

The Anker 622 MagGo features a 5,000 mAh battery, which should give an iPhone about a charge and a half’s worth of extra battery. Of course, wireless charging isn’t as optimal as a direct lightning connection, so those numbers may vary. It’s more the utility that makes the Anker 622 appealing, rather than the efficiency of its charging.

The device comes in a couple of different colors (black, white, blue, green, or purple) to match a case or iPhone color scheme, or users could even go with something that stands out to highlight their portable wireless battery. On the opposite side of the charging surface is a foldable kickstand that can hold an iPhone in place in portrait or landscape mode - a nice touch that allows for wireless charging while still watching a movie, for example.

Of course, the Anker 622 can be used in any different fashion, the profile is just thicker when the battery is attached. Most will probably just snap the battery onto their phone, though, and toss it into their pocket.

Admittedly, the value of something like the Anker 622 MagGo is eliminating wires from the equation when it comes to portable charging. Wireless charging still has some elements that put it behind a direct connection, but there is value in being able to hold a battery up to an iPhone, have it stay in place, and get a charge. For starters, it makes it so users don’t have to carry a cable around in their pocket along with their phone and battery. It's a slight edge to form over function, but not in a way that makes the Anker 622 feel too gimmicky or lacking in utility.

If there are some nitpicks to be had with the Anker 622, it’s the compatibility with the device itself and the iPhone. With this being a USB-C device, that means users will need to have a USB-C cable to charge the MagGo but a lightning cable to charge their iPhone – if they want to do direct charging instead of wireless. The other issue is that the Anker 622 can take over an hour to reach a full charge, which is not ideal for power users.

However, there will be plenty who see the Anker 622 MagGo and feel it is perfect for their portable charger needs. It’s as efficient as a wireless MagSafe charger can be, it has a nice folding stand for a little extra utility, and it takes some of the bulk out of the portable charging equation. At $49, this one is well worth a look.
